Cooling Water Chemicals

Treatment programmes for open recirculating cooling systems, holding scale, corrosion and biological growth in check together.

Ion Exchange offers a broad range of environmentally safe treatment programmes for open recirculating cooling water systems.

An open recirculating tower concentrates everything the make-up water brings with it: each pass evaporates pure water and leaves the dissolved solids behind, while the tower itself scrubs air, dust and organics into a warm, aerated, daylit circuit. Scale, corrosion and biological growth are the three consequences, and they have to be controlled together — chemistry that suppresses one can worsen another if the programme is not balanced across all three.

How It Works

Scale control keeps calcium carbonate and other sparingly soluble salts in solution past the point at which they would deposit on the hottest surfaces in the exchanger, so the circuit can be held at its intended cycles of concentration without losing heat transfer.

Corrosion control maintains a protective film on the mild steel, copper and admiralty surfaces in the loop. Biological control uses oxidising and non-oxidising biocides against the biofilm that both fouls heat transfer surfaces and shelters the organisms responsible for under-deposit corrosion — which is why the biological side of the programme is a corrosion measure as much as a fouling one.

What the Programme Controls

Scale Control

Holds sparingly soluble salts in solution so they do not deposit on heat transfer surfaces.

Corrosion Control

Maintains a protective film on the mild steel, copper and admiralty metallurgy in the circuit.

Biological Control

Oxidising and non-oxidising biocides against biofilm, which fouls heat transfer and shelters under-deposit corrosion.

Open Recirculating Systems

Programmes are formulated for open recirculating cooling water systems, where evaporation concentrates the circuit and the tower is open to the air.

Why It Matters

Protects Heat Transfer

Scale and biofilm both insulate exchanger surfaces; controlling them is what keeps the cooling duty the circuit was designed for.

Extends Equipment Life

Corrosion control addresses the mixed metallurgy of a cooling loop rather than one metal in isolation.

Supports Higher Cycles of Concentration

Holding scale in check is what lets a tower run at higher cycles, which reduces blowdown and make-up demand.
