Whole Milk & Skim Milk Concentration

Reverse osmosis that concentrates whole and skim milk, cutting shipping and evaporator costs.

Whole milk and skim milk are concentrated using dairy reverse osmosis membranes. Reverse osmosis is a pressure-driven membrane separation technique employed to separate water from milk, reducing shipping volumes and transport costs.

Concentrating milk by membrane ahead of evaporation increases Total Solids (TS) levels by removing water, making it a more energy-efficient technology than conventional alternatives such as evaporators alone or the addition of milk powder — and it does so without altering the relative composition of the milk components.

How It Works

Milk is pumped across a reverse osmosis membrane under pressure. Water passes through as permeate, while milk solids are retained and concentrated on the retentate side.

Because RO removes water rather than altering the milk’s composition, the concentrated milk retains its relative balance of fat, protein and other solids, ready for evaporation or further processing at a reduced volume.

System Benefits

Volume & Cost Reduction

Removing water from milk prior to evaporators reduces shipping volumes and transport costs.

Reduced Evaporator Load

RO concentration minimizes evaporator load and the fuel and energy cost that comes with it.

Composition Preserved

The membrane system concentrates whole or skim milk without altering the relative composition of its components.

Why Reverse Osmosis for Milk Concentration

More Energy Efficient

Increasing Total Solids by membrane concentration is more energy efficient than conventional evaporation or milk powder addition alone.

Cuts Transport Cost

Reducing shipping volume before transport directly reduces the cost of moving concentrated milk.

No Compositional Change

Water is removed without altering the relative composition of the milk’s components.
