Refineries
Low-carbon hydrogen for desulfurization, hydrotreating and hydrocracking, supporting cleaner fuel production and reduced carbon emissions from refinery operations.
Green hydrogen is emerging as a key enabler of industrial decarbonization. Hydrogen is widely used across major industries including Refineries, Fertilizers, Steel, Chemicals, Methanol, Semiconductor, Mobility etc. & much of it produced from fossil fuels associated with Carbon Cost. “Green” hydrogen offers a lower-carbon alternative and has the potential to reduce emissions in these hard-to-abate sectors.
Green Hydrogen is made by water electrolysis process using two critical inputs: renewable electricity and high-purity water. While renewable power is central to the process & most talked about, consistent electrolyzer-grade water quality is equally important for efficient operation, equipment protection and long-term plant reliability.
India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to position the country as a global hub for green hydrogen production, utilization and export.
With its expertise in advanced water treatment, Ultra-Pure Water (UPW) systems and EPC solutions, Ion Exchange can support green hydrogen projects through electrolyzer-grade water purification systems and integrated plant solutions & in collaboration with competent electrolyzer technology partners.
National Green Hydrogen Mission ↗01
Low-carbon hydrogen for desulfurization, hydrotreating and hydrocracking, supporting cleaner fuel production and reduced carbon emissions from refinery operations.
02
Hydrogen is a key raw material for ammonia production, which is essential for nitrogen-based fertilizers. Green hydrogen enables low-carbon ammonia production, supporting the decarbonization of fertilizer manufacturing. Green ammonia can be used as a transport carrier for Hydrogen as well.
03
Green hydrogen can replace coal-based reducing agents in direct reduced iron (DRI) production, reducing carbon emissions in steelmaking and supporting the transition towards low-carbon steel.
04
Hydrogen is a core feedstock for methanol and other chemicals, with green methanol emerging as a marine fuel as well as hydrogen carrier.
05
Green hydrogen can power fuel cell vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks, buses and commercial fleets, offering fast refueling and long driving ranges for demanding transport applications.
06
Green hydrogen can support low-carbon back up power generation for data centers through fuel cells, providing backup power and potential low-emission alternatives to conventional diesel generators for reliable, uninterrupted operations.

Output
Supporting green hydrogen production through integrated & containerized hydrogen skids.

01 / Water systems
Ion Exchange designs water treatment systems to meet the high-purity feedwater requirements of alkaline and PEM electrolyzers. Each system is configured to suit the raw water quality, required water purity and plant capacity, integrating pre-treatment, reverse osmosis, deionization and final polishing as required.
Water system specification: Conductivity < 0.1 μS/cm can be achieved with IEL water systems.
02 / EPC
Ion Exchange leverages its engineering, procurement and construction expertise to support the development of integrated green hydrogen plants. The approach brings water treatment systems, electrolyzer interfaces and balance-of-plant infrastructure together through coordinated project engineering and execution.
Depending on project requirements, the scope can include utility integration, containerized hydrogen skids, equipment interfaces and commissioning support, with clear definition of deliverables and responsibilities for each project.
03 / Technology partnerships
Several electrolyzer technologies exist, and no single one fits every project. IEL is technology-agnostic, so it brings the best-fit electrolyzer partner to each customer rather than fitting every project to one technology.
Each solution is tailored to the customer's objectives, plant capacity, power profile and site conditions, with a focus on reliable operation, efficient integration and long-term project performance.
Dominant electrolyzer technologies in the market include alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM). Each offers distinct operating characteristics, enabling technology selection based on project requirements, plant capacity and operating conditions.
