The manufacturing process in the automobile industry generates a significant amount of wastewater contaminated by discharge of coolant oil (natural or semi-synthetic in origin) and alkaline washings. Oily wastewater, especially waste coolant water, is difficult to treat and hazardous to the environment — its disposal is a major environmental problem in the industry.
Advanced membrane processing removes suspended solids and separates the coolant oil from the wastewater at high recovery rates. Water recovered in the permeate stream is collected and reused in the process plant, while concentrated oil collected in the reject stream can be discharged for disposal.
How It Works
Coolant-contaminated wastewater is passed across a membrane that separates suspended solids and emulsified oil from the water. Clean permeate is collected in a tank and returned to the process plant for reuse.
The oil concentrated in the reject stream is separated from the bulk water volume, reducing it to a much smaller stream suited to disposal under pollution control board norms rather than requiring the entire wastewater volume to be treated as hazardous.
Benefits
Water Recovery & Reuse
Recovered water is collected and reused in the plant process rather than drawn fresh.
Simplified Oil Disposal
Waste coolant oil is separated and concentrated for easier disposal in line with Pollution Control Board norms.
Why Membrane Treatment for Coolant Recovery
Reduces Fresh Water Draw
Recovered permeate water is reused in the process plant, cutting the fresh water the plant needs to draw.
Compliant Disposal
Concentrating the oil into a smaller reject stream supports disposal within Pollution Control Board norms.
High Recovery Rate
Membrane separation recovers usable water from oily wastewater at high recovery rates.
