Forward Osmosis (FO) is a 'green' membrane process used to concentrate effluent ahead of thermal treatment in a Zero Liquid Discharge scheme. It separates water from dissolved solids using a semi-permeable membrane, pulling water molecules across via the natural difference in osmotic pressure between the feed and draw sides — rather than by applying an external pump or hydraulic pressure, as reverse osmosis does.
In a ZLD train, FO sits ahead of the evaporation stage, reducing the volume of effluent that needs to be thermally concentrated and cutting the energy load on the evaporators that follow.
How It Works
A semi-permeable membrane separates the effluent (feed side) from a draw solution with a higher osmotic concentration. Water molecules migrate naturally from the feed side to the draw side, driven by the osmotic pressure difference rather than by pumping the feed under pressure.
The draw solution is then regenerated to release the extracted water and re-concentrate itself for reuse, while the feed side is left as a smaller volume of more concentrated effluent, ready for the evaporation stage of the ZLD scheme.
Where Forward Osmosis Fits in ZLD
Membrane Concentration Stage
FO reduces effluent volume ahead of thermal treatment, cutting the load the evaporators need to carry.
Low External Energy Input
Water transport is driven by osmotic pressure rather than an external pump, distinguishing FO from pressure-driven membrane processes like RO.
Why It Matters
No External Hydraulic Pressure Required
FO draws water across the membrane using osmotic pressure differences alone, rather than an external pump.
Reduces the Evaporation Load
Concentrating effluent with FO first cuts the volume — and therefore the energy demand — the downstream evaporators need to process.
Fits Within a Wider ZLD Scheme
FO is a concentration step, not a standalone solution — it works alongside evaporation and crystallization to reach zero liquid discharge.
