In automobile manufacturing, vehicle bodies and other parts are dipped into a paint bath for electrocoat (E-Coat) painting, followed by water rinsing to remove excess paint from the bodies and parts. The rinse water containing paint traces is treated using an advanced UF specialty membrane system to recover this paint by removing water.
Existing conventional methods feed the entire effluent load to the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), incurring substantial capital and operational costs for waste management. The advanced UF specialty membrane system instead treats the rinsing effluent from the paint bath directly, recovering up to 98% of paint solids for reuse.
How It Works
Rinse water carrying paint traces from the E-Coat bath is passed across a UF specialty membrane. Paint solids are retained at high rejection and concentrated on the retentate side, while clear permeate passes through.
The recovered paint solids are returned to the paint tank for reuse in the coating process, while the clear permeate is recycled back into the rinse bath, so both the paint and the rinse water are recovered rather than sent to the ETP as effluent.
Benefits of E-Coat Membrane Systems
High Paint Recovery
Recovers up to 98% of paint solids from paint bath rinse water for reuse in the next coating cycle.
Clear Recycled Permeate
High absolute rejection of paint achieves a clear permeate that is recycled for further use.
Why UF for E-Coat Paint Recovery
Recovers Valuable Paint
Up to 98% of paint solids are recovered for reuse in the paint tank rather than lost to effluent.
Reduces ETP Load
Treating the rinsing effluent directly avoids feeding the entire load to the Effluent Treatment Plant, cutting capital and operational cost.
Closes the Water Loop
Clear permeate is recycled back into the rinse bath, reducing fresh water demand for the process.
