Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)

A zero liquid discharge plant with tall stainless steel evaporator columns in a steel structure

Overview

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is an advanced wastewater treatment process designed to recover and reuse water while eliminating liquid effluent discharge from an industrial facility. It typically combines biological or physico-chemical treatment, membrane technologies such as UF and RO, and thermal systems such as MEE, crystallizers, and ATFD to recover water and convert residual dissolved salts into solids for recovery or disposal.

Conventional treatment compared with modern integrated solutions: raw water, water treatment plant, process, product recovery plant and a zero liquid discharge plant returning recycled water, with no liquid discharge. Our recycle solutions integrate physicochemical, biological and membrane separation processes for optimum water recovery. They include advanced effluent treatment processes, micro filtration, ultra filtration, nano filtration and reverse osmosis systems, membrane bioreactors and advanced photochemical oxidation.

INDION Multi Effect Evaporator

Ion Exchange offers advanced Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) solutions integrated with INDION® Multi-Effect Evaporators (MEE) to maximize water recovery, minimize wastewater discharge and promote sustainable industrial operations. Designed as reliable end-of-pipe treatment solutions, these systems integrate effluent recycling technologies with advanced evaporation processes to reduce liquid waste and support compliance with stringent environmental regulations. Our comprehensive product range includes Falling Film Evaporators, Forced Circulation Evaporators, Thermo Vapour Re-compressors (TVR), Mechanical Vapour Re-compressors (MVR), Agitated Thin Film Dryers and Scraped Surface systems. By combining these technologies with pretreatment, biological treatment and membrane systems, Ion Exchange delivers integrated ZLD solutions that optimize water reuse, reduce freshwater consumption and operating costs, and support responsible industrial water management.

Brine concentration

The system efficiently handles RO reject & further concentrates brine for effective treatment and resource recovery. It achieves high concentrations (>20% NaCl) with minimal energy use compared to other brine concentration methods. Its chlorine-tolerant membrane material reduces biological fouling and energy recovery is optimized for larger capacities. It delivers the lowest lifecycle cost compared to existing processes.

Crystallization

Crystallization in a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Process is the final stage of treatment, where concentrated brine from an evaporator or MEE is further processed to convert dissolved salts into solid crystals.
